Serious, stubborn, obstinate, patient, productive, willful and
                determined qualities are indicated.
The individual may possess good organizational abilities, as
well as an understanding of mechanical systems (practical, theoretical,
symbolic and/or social). A great love of beauty, pleasure and
sensuality is may manifest. Creative, manual, economic and agricultural
pursuits are favored. Prosperity may be attained.
Ceginus is Phi Bootis in the constellation of Bootes, the Herdsman.
Ceginus, also spelled Seginus, is also the name of Gamma Bootis.
The name of these stars is derived from the Theguius, the Greek
                name of this constellation.
              The character represented
by the constellation Bootes is somewhat elusive. Some call
Bootes "the Bear Watcher", due to
its proximity to Ursa Major. It has been identified with Arcas
the Hunter, the son of Callisto, the nymph who was transformed
into a bear after her love affair with Zeus. Bootes is more commonly,
however, identified as a celestial herdsman.
              According to one
Greek legend, the figure of Bootes was the person who invented
the plough. This agricultural innovator so
pleased the goddess Demeter that she petitioned Zeus to place
him in the sky for posterity. The name Bootes comes from the
Latin root bos or bov, meaning "cow", from which we
derive the English word "bovine". This identifies Bootes
as a cowherd rather than a shepherd.
              Cows are traditionally
associated with the qualities of stability, patience, strength,
                  dependability and stubbornness. They have
been revered for the life-sustaining properties of their meat,
milk and hides. The Egyptian goddess Hathor, who is traditionally
depicted in the form of a cow or as a woman with bull horns atop
her head, is the patroness of fertility, motherhood, earthly
abundance, joy and celebration. Similarly, the Olympian goddess
Hera, consort of Zeus (Jupiter) and Queen of the Gods, bore the
epithet Bo-opis, or "Ox Eyed". Another bovine divinity
acknowledged in ancient Egypt is Apis, a solar bull god associated
with agriculture and nourishment. Apis was said to be the soul
                (ka) of the god Osiris.
In India the divine cow Nandi was recognized as the primary
disciple, gatekeeper and mount of the god Shiva. Reverence for
Nandi dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The Indians
also venerate Kamadhenu, the mother of all cows, a benevolent
deity said to have the power to grant any wish.
              Of the nature of
Bootes Robson states, "According to Ptolemy
the influence. . .is like that of Mercury and Saturn. It is said
to give prosperity from work, strong desires, a tendency to excess,
and a fondness for rural pursuits, together with some liking
for occultism. The Kabalists associate it with the Hebrew letter
Teth and the 9th Tarot Trump, the Hermit.”

Sun conjunct Syrma, Orb: 0 deg 42 min
An active, vital and highly inquisitive mind in denoted. There
may be an inclination towards the investigation of mysteries,
especially those involving the inner workings of the natural
world and/or the human mind. Great discoveries and revelations
are possible. The ability to mobilize action and assume a position
of responsibility is also indicated. Scientific, artistic, mystical,
agricultural, mechanical and social pursuits are favored.
Syrma is Iota Virginis in the constellation of Virgo, the Virgin.
This star's name comes from the Greek word Surma, which refers
to a long garment with a trailing train. Ptolemy was the first
to assign this name to this star, which designates the lower
                part of Virgo's long dress.
              Syrma was included
in several ancient asterisms, including the Sogdian Sarwar
and the Khorasmian Shusak, both meaning "the
Leader". A commanding and pioneering influence may be implied
by this association. Syrma was also a part of the Persian asterism
Hucru, which translates to "Good Go-er", alluding to
the ability to take action and move forward.
              The Akkadian asterism
Lu Lim, or "the He Goat", also
claimed this star. It may have been referred to in ancient Babylon
as Mulu Bat, "the Death Star".
              The Copts of Egypt
associated Syrma with their asterism Khambalia, from which
Lambda Virginis takes its name. The meaning of this
title is somewhat obscure. Dr. Eric Morse, in his book The Living
Stars, claims that it was "most probably the same device
which we call the Swastika and whose ancient symbolism contained
the idea of secret knowledge, accessible to us, but only if one
knows the way to get it.” Morse goes on to say that, "The
word Shambala has a similar root and meaning; so has the pentagram,
so has the Arabic word for five, Khamsa, may well also derive
from the same piece of mystique.”
              The swastika, or
crooked cross, is a sacred solar symbol dating back to Neolithic
times. This ubiquitous motif has been evidenced
in Baltic, Slavic, Celtic, Buddhist, Jain, American Indian and
Ancient Roman art. It is especially widely employed in Hindu
iconography. The word swastika itself derives from the Sanskrit
svastik, meaning "an auspicious object". Also known
as the Sun Wheel or the Sun Cross, this symbol typically denotes
a solar influence and is thought to represent the life-sustaining
providence of the sun and its yearly cycle. Before 1870, the
swastika was known in English by it's Greek name gammadion, which
derives from gamma, meaning "four". The four spokes
of the Sun Wheel stand for the four seasons, each marked by a
solstice or equinox. The four elements of Earth, Air, Fire and
Water also correspond to this form. The concept that is implied
is that of the simple beauty and harmonious balance of these
forces and the significance of the equilibrium that is maintained
                through their perpetual motion.
              Syrma is also a component
of the manzil, or Arabic lunar mansion, of Al Ghafr. Al Ghafr
                  means "the Covering". The significance
of this title may relate to the Greek association of Syrma with
the article of clothing which covers the celestial figure of
Virgo. Themes of secrecy or esotericism may be inferred. Robson
states that this manzil is "favorable for extracting treasures".
In other words, the influence of this star relates to unveiling
that which is hidden. This concept reflects Morse's interpretation
                of the Crooked Cross.
The constellation of Virgo was known in the Classical world
as Aristae Puella, the Maiden of the Harvest. This figure was
associated with both the maiden goddess Persephone/Proserpine
and her mother Demeter/Ceres, Goddess of the Grain. Persephone
was abducted by Hades, the God of the Underworld. Demeter wept
and pined for her daughter's return to the surface of the Earth.
Persephone eventually returned with the help of Hermes, but since
she had eaten three pomegranate seeds in the Underworld, she
was obliged to spend three months out of every year with Hades.
Each year, when Persephone revisits the realm of the dead, Demeter
refuses to make the leaves grow and the seeds sprout. This is
                winter.
When the sun enters the sign of Virgo in the Northern Hemisphere
the harvest season begins. This is the time of preparation for
Persephone's departure to the Underworld and Demeter's months
of bitter protest. Persephone's journey from light to darkness
and back to light mirrors the yearly cycle of the sun emblematized
                by the Crooked Cross.
              Virgo is also associated
with the the Near Eastern Great Goddess known as Isis (Egyptian),
                  Ishtar (Babylonian), Astarte (Semetic)
and Cybele (Anatolian). This goddess in her many forms is concerned
with love, fertility, triumph, growth, nourishment, creation
and abundance. She, like the Greek Aphrodite, has been thought
to be the divine personification of the planet Venus. Virgo is
also linked to the un-wed, "virginal" goddesses of
                Classical mythology, Athena and Artemis.
              Of the influence
of the constellation Virgo Robson quotes Ptolemy; "The
stars in the head of Virgo, and that at the top of the southern
wing operate like Mercury and somewhat like Mars, the other stars
in the same wing, and those about the girdle resemble Mercury
in their influence and also Venus moderately. . . those at the
feet and at the bottom of the garments are like Mercury and also
like Mars moderately. . .” Syrma is at the bottom of the
garments, so according to Ptolemy it is similar in influence
                to Mercury and Mars.
              Robson adds that, "By
the Kabalists (Virgo) is associated with the Hebrew letter
Gimel and the 3rd Tarot Trump, the Empress.”

Proud, dignified, confident, expressive and charismatic qualities
are denoted. The individual may attain a high level of public
visibility. Exceptionally unique talents are likely and the discovery
of these talents may play an important role in life. Theatrical,
political, social and artistic pursuits are favored.
              Subra is Omicron
Leonis in the constellation of Leo, the Lion. The name Subra
is derived from the Arabic Al Zubrah, meaning "the
Mane (of the Lion)". The lion's mane is this majestic beast's
crowning glory. Symbolically, it may represent the epitome of
the Leonine characteristics of pride, self-expression, authority
                and magnificence.
The constellation of Leo is generally thought to represent the
Nemean Lion, the vicious child of Typhon and Echidna, who was
                slain by Hercules.
              Lions have long been
revered by humans and identified with the qualities of grace,
nobility, strength and courage. In fact,
the oldest known figurine combining human and animal attributes
is a stone carving of a lion-headed man. This "Lion Man" was
discovered in Germany's Hohlenstein-Stadel cave and is attributed
to the Upper Paleolithic Aurignacian civilization. It is currently
dated to be 32,000 years old.
Lions are seen depicted in the art of virtually every ancient
civilization including Babylon, Assyria and Mycenae. The Ancient
Egyptians worshipped the deity Sehkmet, who is portrayed as a
woman with the head of a lion. Sehkmet was the ferocious and
fearsome goddess of War. She was invoked for courage in battle.
Similarly, in India lions were the emblem of the Kshatriya, or
warrior class. The Indian goddess Durga, a fierce warrior and
divine protector, is often seen riding a lion. The Nubian god
Dedun, who came to be associated with wealth and prosperity also
took the form of a lion.
              Robson quotes Ptolemy
on the nature of Leo; "Of the stars
in Leo, the two in the head are like Saturn and partly like Mars.
The three in the neck are like Saturn and in some degree like
Mercury. . . Those in the loins. . .Saturn and Venus: those in
the thighs resemble Venus and in some degree Mercury". Robson
also states that "By the Kabalists, Leo is associated with
the Hebrew letter Kaph and the 11th Tarot Trump, Strength".

              Ukdah 1 is Tau 1
Hydrae in the constellation of Hydra, the Water Snake. The
name Ukdah is derived from the Arabic Al Uqdah, or "the
Knot". This star and its neighbor Ukdah 2 (Tau 2 Hydrae)
have been perceived as forming a knot in the serpentine form
of Hydra. The association of knots with these stars implies themes
                of attachment and bonding.
The constellation Hydra is thought to represent the Hydra of
Lerna, a primordial water monster defeated by Heracles. Like
it's siblings Cerberus, Chimera and the Nemean Lion, Hydra inspired
fear and awe. The creature was characterized by it's multitude
of heads and poisonous breath. It's function was guardianship
of an entrance to the Underworld located at the bottom of the
Lake of Lerna. Hydra may be analogous to the Vedic deity Shesha,
who is depicted as a massive serpent with many heads. Shesha
is king of the Nagas, or subterranean serpent folk, and is said
to be an avatar of the Supreme God.
              Of the influence

fear and awe.
              Of the influence
of Hydra, Robson states, "It is said to
give an emotional and passionate nature, threatened by great
                troubles."

Interests may lie in justice, law, ethics, morality or social
organization. A diplomatic role may be taken. The practice of
achieving equilibrium and harmony in ones environment may be
a consistent life theme. A high level of mental activity is also
denoted. Social, cultural, legal, intellectual, judicial, executive,
political and creative activities are favored; as are all pursuits
requiring a good sense of balance.
              Zuben Elakribi is
Delta Librae in the constellation of Libra, the Scales. The
name Zuben Elakribi is derived from the Arabic
Al Zuban al Akrab, meaning "the Claws of the Scorpion".
This title arose from the ancient perception of Libra not as
its own constellation, but as the claws of the neighboring constellation
                of Scorpio.
              According to Allen,
this star was included in the Akkadian asterism Mulu-izi, meaning "Man of Fire".
This asterism was associated with the obscure star god Laterak.
              The constellation
Libra represents the Scales of Justice held by the ancient
Greek goddess Astraea. Astraea, whose name means "Star
Maiden", was the daughter of Zeus (Jupiter) and the Titaness
Themis. The name Themis translates to "Natural Law" or "that
which is put in place". Themis and her daughter are both
divinities personifying Justice, Order and Truth. Astraea is
often associated with the constellation Virgo, the Virgin, which
borders Libra in the night sky and precedes it in the zodiac
                wheel.
Justitia, the Roman equivalent to Astraea, lends her name to
the English word justice. She was personified as a bare-chested
woman holding scales in one hand and a sword in the other, symbolizing
judgment and consequences. Today she is known as Lady Justice
and still presides over courtrooms. She is now typically depicted
with a blindfold over her eyes, an accoutrement of the Roman
deity Fortuna, the goddess of Luck.
The scales of Libra also reflect the image of the scales of
Ma'at, the Egyptian goddess of Law, Morality and Justice. Like
Themis and Astraea, Ma'at concerns herself with the ordering
of natural forces. The Egyptian Books of the Dead (texts which
describe the soul's journey after death) tell of a ceremonial
trial of the afterlife. During this trial, one's heart is placed
on a scale to be weighed against the feather of Ma'at. If the
heart is lighter than the feather the soul may continue existence.
If the heart outweighs the feather, however, it is consumed by
Ammit, a terrifying creature who appears in a composite form
as part leopard, part crocodile and part hippopotamus.
              Libra is unique among
the constellations of the zodiac as it the only one to be represented
by an object rather than a person
or animal. It is also the newest addition to the zodiac. The
ancients saw it not in it's present form but as Chelae Scorpius, "the
                Claws of the Scorpion".
              Of Libra's astrological
                  properties Robson quotes Ptolemy; "Those
stars at the points of the claws of Scorpio operate like Jupiter
and Mercury: those in the middle of the claws, like Saturn and
in some degree like Mars.” Robson also states that Libra
is associated with the eighth letter of the Hebrew alphabet,
Heth, and the 8th Tarot Trump, Justice. The number eight is often
invoked to describe systems of divine order and natural harmony.
Some examples are the Eight Immortals of Chinese myth, the Eight
Vasus ("Excellences") of Hindu tradition, the Eight
Angels who carry the throne of Allah in Islam, and the Eight
Great Boddisatvas embodying aspects of the Noble Eightfold Path
                in Buddhism.

This title arose from the ancient perception of Libra not as
its own constellation, but as the claws of the neighboring constellation
                of Scorpio.
              Zuben Elgenubi is
included in the nakshatra, or Vedic Lunar Mansion, of Vishakha.
                  Vishakha means "Forked" or "Poison
Vessel". Its ruling deities are Indra, the King of the Gods,
and Agni, the God of Fire. Vishakha is associated with sacrifice,
triumph and a single-minded desire for accomplishment or power.
It is thus symbolized by the triumphal arch, an icon of the celebration
                of great achievement.

Authoritative, strong, courageous, willful, confident, loyal,
stalwart and self-preserving qualities are denoted. An interest
in social issues may manifest. There may also be a desire for
public recognition. Honor, morality and obligation may be important
life themes. Legal, judicial, political and executive pursuits
are favored. A legacy may be started or maintained. Some personal
                sacrifice may be required.
              Asterion is Beta
Canem Venaticorum in the constellation of Canes Venatici, the
Hunting Dogs. This constellation consists of Asterion
and Cor Caroli (Alpha Canem Venaticorum). These two stars where
thought to represent the hounds of Bootes, the Herdsman. The
constellation was named by Johannes Hevelius in the 17th Century.
Asterion was originally entitled Chara, the Greek word for Joy.
Cor Caroli ("Heart of Charles") was known as Asterion
until it was renamed by Edmund Halley, the British Royal Astronomer
at the request of the Royal Physician Sir Charles Scarborough.
It was thus titled in honor of Charles I of England, who was
executed after the English Civil War. It was also associated
with his son, Charles II, who restored the power of the throne.
It is of note that Charles II had a conjunction of Asterion and
Uranus at the Ascendant in his natal chart.
              In Greek myth, the
word Asterion ("Ruler of the Stars")
is associated with two Kings of Crete, as the star Asterion later
came to be associated with two kings of England. The first Cretan
Asterion was said to be the consort of Europa, and assumed the
form of the Cretan Bull of the Sun. The second Asterion is mentioned
in Greek literature as synonymous with the Minotaur, or "Bull
Man" of Crete. The Minotaur inhabited the Labyrinth of King
Minos and required human sacrifices. The Solar Bull Deity of
Cretan worship allegorized in Greek tales as this ferocious bovine-headed
man is hypothesized by some mythologists to be a form of the
Phoenician deity Moloch. Moloch was portrayed as a man with the
head of a bull, and his great hunger for human sacrifice was
so renowned that his name has been incorporated into modern English
as a term for anything which demands costly forfeitures. The
Cretan and Phoenician concepts of the Solar Bull God may have
originated in the Astrological Age of Taurus (hypothesized to
have begun between 4525 BCE and 3814 BCE and ended between 2150
and 1658 BCE) under the guise of the Egyptian Solar Bull Apis.
Egyptian rulers sought to embody the life-sustaining attributes
of the Light of the Sun and the Meat of the Cow, characteristics
deified as Apis (strength, fortitude, virility and stability).
As Moloch and the Minotaur demanded sacrifices, kings demand
the sacrifice of loyalty from their subjects. This theme of loyalty
to authority is reflected in the personification of Asterion
and Cor Caroli as trained hunting dogs, the most obedient of
                animals.
              Of the influence
of Canes Venatici Robson states, "This
constellation gives a love of hunting and a penetrating mind,
making those under it faithful, keen, clever and fond of speculation.”

Proud, refined, dignified, authoritative and respectable qualities
may be indicated. Honor and obligation may be important life
                themes.
              Tse Tseng is Iota
Leonis in the constellation of Leo, the Lion. The name Tse
Tseng (also spelled Tsze Tseang) is Chinese for "the
Second General". This title alludes to themes of hierarchy
                and social duty.
Tse
Tseng is located in the Lion's feet, a region not assessed by
                Ptolemy.
              Robson also states
that "By the Kabalists, Leo is associated
with the Hebrew letter Kaph and the 11th Tarot Trump, Strength".

A position of eminence and respect may be gained. Love, romance,

              Kaus Australis is
Epsilon Sagittarii in the constellation of Sagittarius, the
Archer. Along with Kaus Media (Delta Sagittarii)
and Kaus Borealis (Lambda Sagittarii), this star forms the "Bow
                of the Archer".
              The word Kaus is
derived from the Arabic Qaws, meaning "Bow".
Media, Australis and Borealis are Latin for Middle, Southern
and Northern respectively, designating the position of these
three stars within the celestial figure of Sagittarius.
              In ancient Arabia
the stars of Sagittarius were perceived as heavenly ostriches.
Kaus Australis was included in an asterism
known as Al Na'am al Warid, or "the Departing Ostriches".
The Akkadians similarly connected this star to a member of the
avian family, including it along with Kaus Media and Alnasl in
an asterism called Sin-nun-tu, or "the Swallow".
Swallows carry rich symbolic associations. Their prevalence
on every continent, as well as their proclivity to make their
homes near human settlements, has provided humanity with a longstanding
intimacy with these birds. In ancient Europe, their annual appearance
marked the dawn of spring and thus the return of warmth and light.
As Christianity took hold of the continent the auspicious presence
of the swallow became associated with the resurrection of Jesus
at Easter. Similarly, in China swallows were associated with
the Spring Equinox, and thus with fertility. The nesting of these
birds in a house was thought to portend an early marriage and
                many children.
The correlation between the swallow and the newness, hope and
joy of springtime is also evidenced in ancient Egyptian love
poetry, where the bird was invoked in allegories of the excitement
                of new romance.
The ancient Egyptians also associated swallows with the stars
in the sky, a concept which may parallel the nature of Kaus Media
as a component of the constellation Sagittarius. Chiron, the
mythological figure with whom this constellation is most commonly
associated, was a prototypical astrologer and is often depicted
                stargazing.
The Egyptians also thought of swallows as the souls of the dead.
Chapter 86 of the Egyptian Book of the Dead provides instructions
on how to transform oneself into a swallow in the afterlife.
Taking on a new form in a new life is seems to be a conceptual
continuation of the revival/resurrection connoted by the swallow
through it's associations with springtime and new love. Again
we see these birds as harbingers of joyous newness. This theme
may reflect the nature of Kaus Australis.
              The Kaus trio comprises
the nakshatra, or Vedic Lunar Mansion, of Purvashada, meaning "the Former Invincible One".
Purvashada is traditionally symbolized by a hand held fan, emphasizing
this nakshatra's glamorous and mysterious attributes. It's ruling
deity is Apah, a Venusian ocean goddess. This nakshatra represents
the most refined aspect of Venus, and is characterized by exuberance,
beauty, emotional fulfillment and the triumph of art.
The constellation of Sagittarius represents not a human archer
but a Centaur. Centaurs are fantastic beasts of Greek myth with
the upper body of a human sprouting from the lower body of a
horse. There has been some speculation that the legend of the
Centaurs was inspired by the invading tribes who came to Europe
from Central Asia on horseback. These wild men, whose skill at
riding must have made them appear to be merged as one entity
with their horses, were experts with the bow and arrow.
              These "Centaurs" were
depicted in Greek art and literature as mainly uncivilized,
brutal and warlike in manner, with the
exception of Chiron, the character most commonly associated with
                Sagittarius.
Chiron was a teacher who nurtured the intellects of such renowned
figures as the great healer Asclepius, Jason, the captain hero
of the Golden Fleece cycle, and Aristaeus, the first bee-keeper.
He was known not only for his wide breadth of knowledge of the
healing arts, astrology, divination and philosophy, but also
for his gentle and good-humored nature. Today the arts in which
Chiron instructed his students are still associated with the
                astrological sign of Sagittarius.
              Of the astrological
significance of Sagittarius Robson quotes Ptolemy, "The stars at the point of the arrow in Sagittarius
have influence similar to that of Mars and the Moon: those on
the bow, and at the grasp of the hand act like Jupiter and Mars.
. .those at the waist and in the back resemble Jupiter, and also
Mercury moderately: those in the feet Jupiter and Saturn.” Robson
also states that "by the Kabalists Sagittarius is associated
with the Hebrew letter Vau and the 6th Tarot Trump, the Lovers".
Kaus Australis is in the bow of the archer, so according to
Ptolemy it is primarily Jupiterean and secondarily Martian in
nature. The expansive optimism of Jupiter certainly corresponds
to the triumphant and exuberant nature of Purvashada, as well
as joyous hope represented by the swallow.
              Ebertin echoes Ptolemy's
analysis of the Kaus trio, claiming that these stars have "a Jupiter-Mars nature". Ebertin
elucidates that the bow of the archer is "specially credited
with promoting mental stimuli, enterprise and a sense of justice.
Natives. . .are promoters of justice and humane ideas. . .”

An optimistic, enthusiastic and joyful engagement in life is
indicated. Emotional fulfillment resulting from the unification
of internal duality may be experienced. A delight in new ideas
and innovations is possible. Astrology, mathematics, philosophy,
religion, medicine, psychology, education, travel and the arts
may become areas of interest. Humanitarian or even utopian ideas
may manifest as an extension of one's intrinsically loving and
caring nature. There may also be a tendency towards flamboyance
and dramatic self-expression. Material gain is favored.

may reflect the nature of Kaus Media.
              The Kaus trio comprises
the nakshatra, or Vedic Lunar Mansion, of Purvashada. Kaus
Media in particular is noted by Allen to
be the junction between Purvashada and the following nakshatra,
Uttarashada. An investigation of these two lunar asterisms and
the connection between them may illuminate the unique character
of Kaus Media. Ashada means "Invincible One" or "Unconquerable
One", Purvashada being "the Former Invincible One" and
Uttarashada being "the Latter Invincible One". In Vedic
astrology they connote completion, attainment and victory.
Purvashada is traditionally symbolized by a hand held fan, emphasizing
this nakshatra's glamorous and mysterious attributes. It's ruling
deity is Apah, a Venusian ocean goddess. Of the two Ashadas,
Purvashada is the feminine force. It is the most refined aspect
of Venus, and is characterized by exuberance, beauty, emotional
fulfillment and the triumph of art.
Uttarashada, the more masculine Ashada, claims Ganesha, the
destroyer of all obstacles, as it's patron god.
Also presiding over this nakshatra are the Ten Vishidevas (meaning
Universal Gods). Uttarashada is associated with the beneficial
aspects of civilization, permanent victory, spiritual invincibility
and virtues of truth, willpower and skill.
Kaus Media combines these two highly fortuitous influences,
which may lead to a process of balancing or merging the most
refined aspects of the masculine and feminine forces within its
                natives.

Intelligence, fortitude, perseverance, prudence and strength
of will are indicated. The individual may excel at intellectual,
literary or scholarly pursuits. Grace and athletic ability are
also denoted. There may be a great sense of destiny or commitment
to a higher purpose. Eminence may be gained through patient and
                methodical work.
              Megrez is Delta Ursae
Majoris in the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear.
The name Megrez is derived from the Arabic Al
Maghrez, meaning "the Root of the Tail". This title
refers to Megrez's position within the celestial figure of Ursa
                Major.
              In China this star
was known as Tien Kuen, meaning "Heavenly
Authority". The concept of divine providence is also evidenced
in Vedic tradition, which associates the seven bright stars of
Ursa Major with the saptarishis, or Seven Great Sages, a group
of divinely inspired beings who manage the affairs of our galaxy.
Megrez corresponds to the sage Atri. Atri, a legendary scholar
and bard, was the mind-born son of Brahma, the Great Creator.
He is revered for his spiritual purity and discipline. Atri,
whose name may mean "One Who Progresses", married Anasuya,
whose name means "Free From Envy". Atri is credited
with the composition of Book Five of the Rig Veda. This book
contains hymns celebrating various deities, chiefly Agni, the
God of Fire, and Indra, King of the Gods. It is one of the oldest
religious texts still in use today.
              Ursa Major, also
known today as The Big Dipper, is one of the brightest and
most recognizable constellations in the night sky
and has historically fascinated humanity. In England it is seen
as a plough, and in Burma as a lobster. In Arabia this constellation
is seen as a funeral procession, with the three stars forming
a line (the "tail" of the bear) being mourners following
                a coffin.
              In Greek myth the
Great Bear was Callisto, whose name means "Most
Beautiful". Callisto was a nymph who was transformed into
a bear by the goddess Artemis when Artemis discovered that Callisto
had been impregnated by Zeus. The child Callisto gave birth to
was Arcas, who was known to be a great hunter.
Iroquois legend also refers to Ursa Major as a bear, with the
four stars which form a rectangular pattern being the bear itself
and the three which form a line being hunters in pursuit.
Robson states that, "According to Ptolemy, Ursa Major is
like Mars. It is said to give a quiet, prudent, suspicious, mistrustful,
self-controlled, patient nature, but an uneasy spirit and great
anger and revengefulness when roused. By the Kabalists it is
associated with the Hebrew letter Zain and the 7th Tarot Trump,
The Chariot.” According to Allen, the association of this
constellation with a bear "may have arisen from Aristotle's
idea that it's prototype was the only creature that dared to
invade the frozen North." Thus the Great Bear is a symbol
                of strength, fortitude and perseverance.

Courage, pride, self-involvement, expressiveness and inner strength
are denoted. The individual may be suited for a position of great
responsibility and authority. Matters involving public visibility,
such as politics and acting are favored, as are creative pursuits.
Generosity towards others, as well as high standards for oneself
are likely. Great respect may be gained through one's work.
              Praecipua is 46 Leo
Minoris in the constellation of Leo Minor, the Little Lion.
This constellation, which lies between Leo and
Ursa Major, was created by Johannes Hevelius in 1687 CE. It was
intended to represent a diminutive form of the larger constellation
of Leo. Prior to Hevelius' time, this faint group of stars was
not generally considered to be a constellation. They may have
been associated with the Arabic asterism Al Thiba wa-Auladuha, "the
Gazelle with her Young", or with Al Haud, "the Pond",
into which the celestial Gazelle leapt.
              Allen relates that
the ancient Egyptians associated this portion of the sky with
the god Ptah. Ptah was a creation deity credited
with forming the world by speaking, or singing, it into existence.
His name means "the Opener", since he opened his mouth
to create the world. Ptah was allied with the concepts of life,
stability and power in ancient Egypt. These themes may also relate
to his corner of the cosmos, and thus Praecipua.
              The name Praecipua
is Latin for "Chief", as this is
the brightest star in Leo Minor. Leadership, authority, excellence
and magnificence may be implied by this title, as well as by
the symbolism of the Lion. Lions have long been revered by humans
and identified with the qualities of grace, nobility, strength
and courage. In fact, the oldest known figurine combining human
and animal attributes is a stone carving of a lion-headed man.
This "Lion Man" was discovered in Germany's Hohlenstein-Stadel
cave and is attributed to the Upper Paleolithic Aurignacian civilization.
It is currently dated to be 32,000 years old.
Dedun, who came to be associated with wealth and prosperity,
also took the form of a lion.
              Of the nature of
Leo Minor Robson states, "It gives a generous,
noble, peaceable, but fearless nature, with the ability to undertake
                prominent and responsible positions.”

Uranus conjunct Alsharasif, Orb: 0 deg 54 min
              Sensitive, empathetic, receptive, intuitive, self-reflecting,
insightful, romantic and creative attributes are denoted. Serious,
saturnine and melancholic qualities may develop as well. The
individual may serve to support or protect others emotionally.
              Alsharasif is Beta
Crateris in the constellation of Crater, the Cup. The name
Alsharasif is derived from the Arabic Al Sharasif,
meaning "the Rib". Ribs may be symbolic of support
and protection, as this is their function in the bodies of animals.
According to one Greek myth, Crater represents the Goblet of
Apollo. Apollo, the Solar god of light and reason (as well as
music, poetry and the arts) gave Corvus, the Crow, a goblet to
fetch water. Corvus dallied, eating figs, until much later remembering
his mission. Grabbing the water filled cup, as well as a snake,
he returned to Apollo and told him that the snake had delayed
him. Wise Apollo was not fooled and threw the Crow, the Cup and
the Snake into the heavens, where they became the constellations
Corvus, Crater and Hydra. In another Greek tale, Crater is the
wine glass of Dionysus, the god of wine, madness and religious
                ecstasy.
The cup is an object rich in magical symbolism and cultural
significance. In Western mysticism the cup alludes to the feminine
principle. In the Tarot the suit of Cups is synonymous with the
element of Water and the realm of Emotion. Celtic myth speaks
of cups and cauldrons imbued with magical and regenerative capabilities,
perhaps providing a foundation for the Arthurian legends concerning
the Holy Grail, the blessed cup from which Jesus took his last
drink. The Holy Chalice is still used in Christian Mass to reenact
Christ's Last Supper. Special goblets are used to pour libations
to deities in many religious traditions.
              Robson states that "According
to Ptolemy, (Crater) is like Venus and in some degree like
Mercury. It gives a kind, generous,
cheerful, receptive, passionate and hospitable nature, with good
mental abilities, but subject to apprehension and indecision.
There is a disordered life full of sudden and unexpected events."

A reverence towards oaths, rites and traditions may manifest.
There may be some tendency towards melancholia, as well as an
inclination to assume responsibility for or represent others.
Creative, dramatic, aesthetic, romantic, social and astrological
pursuits may also become areas of interest.
              Benetnash is Eta
Ursae Majoris in the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great
Bear. This star is also known as Alkaid. Both
names derive from the Arabic Al Ka'id Banat al Na'ash, meaning "Chief
Among the Daughters of the Bier". This phrase arises from
the Arabic perception of Ursa Major as funeral procession, with
the four stars forming the rectangular shape (or "body of
the bear") being the coffin bier and the three stars trailing
behind the rectangle (the "tail of the bear") being
the mourning party. Benetnash is the outermost star in the constellation,
or the furthest one from the rectangle.
              Benetnash has also
been referred to as Alcatel, meaning "Destroying".
In China it is known as Yaou Kwang, or "Revolving Light".
It has also been called "the Star of Twinkling Brilliance".
Al Biruni called it Marichi, meaning "Ray of Light".
              In Vedic astrology,
the seven stars of Ursa Major are equated with the Saptarishis,
or "Seven Great Sages", a group
of divine entities who manage the affairs of our galaxy. Benetnash
synonymous with the sage known as Bhrigu. Bhrigu is described
in the Vedas as being the "wish-born son" of Brahma,
the Great Creator. He is said to have been born out of flames
and is associated with the element of fire. The Brigus, a group
of Indian fire priests, claim his lineage. It is this religious
order that is credited with the ritual of offering the divine
plant Soma to the old gods. Bhrigu is also credited with the
invention of predictive astrology and the composition of the
Bhrigu Samhita, a seminal text on Jyotish (Vedic astrology).
In this way he may be viewed as a patron divinity of the practice
of astrology. Bhrigu is also the father of Shukra, whose name
                means "Clear", "White" or "Pure".
Shukra is the spirit of the planet Venus. Consequently some Venusian
influence may be issued by Benetnash.
              According to Ebertin,
the influence of Benetnash is of a "Mars-Saturn-Uranus" nature.
              As for the greater
constellation of Ursa Major, it represents the Great Bear Callisto,
                  whose name means "Most Beautiful".
Callisto was a nymph who was transformed into a bear by the goddess
Artemis when Artemis discovered that Callisto had been impregnated
by Zeus. The child Callisto gave birth to was Arcas, who was
known to be a great hunter.
Iroquois legend also refers to Ursa Major as a bear, with the
four stars which form a rectangular pattern being the bear itself
and the three which form a line being hunters in pursuit. Alioth,
the first star in the line, is said to be the hunter who carries
the weapons to kill the bear. The two which follow (Mizar and
Benetnash) carry implements to cook the bear.

Uranus conjunct Labrum, Orb: 0 deg 58 min
An intelligent, intuitive, empathetic and emotionally sensitive
nature is indicated. A deep longing for spiritual and emotional
fulfillment resulting in many strange adventures is likely. There
may be a tendency towards romantic idealism, fantasy and potentially
melodrama. Pursuits involving travel, poetry, music, theatre
                and the arts are favored.
              Labrum is Delta Crateris
in the constellation of Crater, the Cup. The word Labrum is
Latin for "the Lip", in this
context ostensibly the lip of the Cup. Robson asserts that this
star is "symbolically called the Holy Grail". The attributes
associated with this mythical vessel may therefore illustrate
                the astrological influence of Labrum.
              Christian myth speaks
of the Holy Grail (sometimes synonymous with the Holy Chalice)
as the dish or goblet employed by Jesus
at the Last Supper, and alternately as the cup which was used
to catch his blood as he died. The magical powers associated
with the Grail include producing an unlimited amount of food
and drink, granting a youthful immortality to it's bearer, and
becoming attainable only to the pure of heart. The Arthurian
legendary cycle of medieval Britain concerns itself with the
quest for this precious object. Through the captivating stories
of the Arthurian knights' brave endeavors to possess the Grail,
the phrase "Holy Grail" itself became a metaphor for
anything desperately sought and deeply desired. It has been widely
interpreted as an icon representing spiritual attainment, or
the ultimate and everlasting union with the divine. The desire
for such an experience may correlate to the functioning of Labrum.
The Arthurian Grail legends may have been inspired in part by
ancient Celtic myths, such as the tale of Bran the Blessed. These
stories speak of sacred cups and cauldrons possessing the same
magical abilities as the Grail. It's capacity to provide unlimited
nourishment also parallels the ancient Greek legend of the cornucopia,
the ever-nourishing horn of the goat goddess Amalthea. Labrum,
as the Holy Grail, may denote an individual's search for (and
attainment of) such a source of perpetual spiritual sustenance.
In Western mysticism the cup alludes to the feminine principle.
In the Tarot the suit of Cups is synonymous with the element
of Water and the realm of Emotion. The Grail Quest legends are
decidedly emotional rather than intellectual in nature. They
are poetic tales of romance and deep longing. The protagonists
of these stories follow their hearts rather than their heads,
and their paths often resemble spirals more than straight lines.
              According to Robson,
Crater "is like Venus and to some
degree like Mercury. It gives a kind, generous, cheerful, receptive,
passionate and hospitable nature, with good mental abilities,
but subject to apprehension and indecision.”
              Of Labrum specifically
                  Robson elucidates; "It gives ideality,
psychic power, intelligence, honor and riches in disgrace and
                purifies to salvation.”

Competitive, forceful, unyielding, assertive, proud, noble and
generous qualities are denoted. Formidable challenges will be
met with strength and dignity. A position of acclaim may be gained
                by force of will.
              Zavijava is Beta
Virginis in the constellation of Virgo, the Virgin. The name
Zavijava is derived from the Arabic Al Zawiah,
meaning "the Corner". This title refers to the corner
of the Kennel of the Barking Dogs, an ancient Arabic asterism
associated with the manzil, or Arabic Lunar Mansion, of Al Awwa, "the
Barker". According to Robson, Al Awwa "gives benevolence,
gain, voyages, harvests and freedom of captives".
              Other Arabic titles
for this star have included Warak al Asad, "the
Lion's Haunches" and Al Bard, "the Cold".
              In China Zavijava
was known as Yew Chi Fa, "the Right-Hand
Maintainer of the Law". This title implies themes of social
order and the preservation of structure.
              In ancient Babylon
Zavijava marked the ecliptic asterism Shep-arku sha-A, meaning "the Hind Leg of the Lion". With Zaniah
(Eta Virginis), this star was known as Ninsar, "the Lady
of Heaven", which as Allen notes "probably refers to
Istar". Istar (or Ishtar) was the Babylonian goddess of
love and war. She is equated to the Sumerian Inanna, "the
Queen of Heaven", and may be a divine personification of
                the planet Venus.
              Ishtar, like Zavijava,
was associated with lions. King Nebuchadnezzar II dedicated
a city gate in Babylon to this goddess in the year
575 BCE. This magnificent structure, known as the "Ishtar
Gate", was decorated with lions. Lions have long been revered
by humans and identified with the qualities of grace, nobility,
strength and courage. The Ancient Egyptians worshipped the deity
Sehkmet, who is portrayed as a woman with the head of a lion.
Sehkmet was the ferocious and fearsome goddess of war. She was
invoked for courage in battle. Similarly, in India lions were
the emblem of the Kshatriya, or warrior class. The Indian goddess
Durga, a fierce warrior and divine protector, is often seen riding
a lion. Ishtar was the goddess of war as well as love. It is
this aspect of her nature which may relate to Zavijava.
              Robson states that
this star is "of the nature of Mercury
and Mars", elaborating that, "It gives beneficence,
force of character, strength, combative movements and destructiveness".
Robson's analysis seems to correlate to the warlike aspect of
both the goddess and the animal linked in the ancient world to
                Zavijava.
The constellation of Virgo, the Virgin, is most commonly associated
with the Greek goddess Persephone and her mother Demeter, Goddess
of the Grain. According to legend, Persephone was abducted by
Hades, the God of the Underworld. Demeter wept and pined for
her daughter's return to the surface of the Earth. Persephone
eventually returned with the help of Hermes, but since she had
eaten three pomegranate seeds in the Underworld, she was obliged
to spend three months out of every year with Hades. Each year,
when Persephone goes down to the realm of the dead, Demeter refuses
to make the leaves grow and the seeds sprout. This is winter.
When the sun enters the sign of Virgo in the Northern Hemisphere,
it is the Autumn (Harvest) season, a time of preparation for
Persephone's departure and Demeter's months of bitter protest.
Ishtar/Inanna underwent a similar journey to the Underworld.
In the Mesopotamian legend the goddess travels to the depths
of the subterranean realm where she is taunted and held captive
by Ereshkigal, the Queen of the Great Below. To be released,
her lover Tammuz/Dumuzi must take her place in the Underworld
                for half of each year.
              Of the influence
of the constellation Virgo Robson quotes Ptolemy; "The
stars in the head of Virgo, and that at the top of the southern
wing operate like Mercury and somewhat like Mars, the other stars
in the same wing, and those about the girdle resemble Mercury
in their influence and also Venus moderately. . . those at the
feet and at the bottom of the garments are like Mercury and also
like Mars moderately. . .” Robson adds that, "By the
Kabalists (Virgo) is associated with the Hebrew letter Gimel
and the 3rd Tarot Trump, the Empress.”

A position of social prominence may be gained. A passionate,
romantic, vital and energetic nature may manifest.
According to Robson, "Sharp, rash, headstrong, original,
                organizer" .
              Agena is Beta Centauri
in the constellation of Centaurus, the Centaur. The name Agena
is derived from the Latin root geni,
meaning "the Knee". This star is located in the knee
                of the Centaur.
              Agena has also been
referred to by the Arabic terms Hadar, meaning "Ground",
and Wazn, meaning "Weight". These terms most likely
arose from this star's proximity to the celestial equator.
              In China, Agena was
known as Mah Fuh, "the Horse's Belly".
To the Bushmen of South Africa Agena and its neighbor Alpha Centauri
were the "Two Men Who Once Were Lions".
Of Agena Robson states, "According to Ptolemy it is of
the nature of Venus and Jupiter, but Alvidas suggests an influence
similar to that of Mars conjunct Mercury. It gives position,
friendship, refinement, morality, health and honor".
              Ebertin also cites
a "strong Venus character with a touch
of Jupiter" for this star, elucidating that, "If this
fixed star. . .is in connection with Mercury or on the Ascendant
and in conjunction with a benefic, it can be taken as a promise
for happiness and success. Tied up with Venus. . .this star will
                make for pronounced sensuality.”
The greater constellation of Centaurus represents a centaur.
Centaurs are fantastic beasts of Greek myth with the upper body
of a human sprouting from the lower body of a horse. There has
been some speculation that the legend of the Centaurs was inspired
by the invading tribes who came to Europe from Central Asia on
horseback. These wild men, whose skill at riding must have made
them appear to be merged as one entity with their horses, were
experts with the bow and arrow.
              These "centaurs" were
depicted in Greek art and literature as mainly uncivilized,
brutal and warlike in manner, with the
exception of Chiron. Chiron was a teacher who nurtured the intellects
of such renowned figures as the great healer Asclepius, Jason,
the captain hero of the Golden Fleece cycle, and Aristaeus, the
first bee-keeper. Chiron was known not only for his wide breadth
of knowledge of the healing arts, astrology, divination and philosophy,
but also for his gentle and good-humored nature.
Centaurus is associated with Chiron, and alternately with Pholos.
Pholos was another unusually gentle Centaur. His myth involves
his hospitality to the hero Heracles (Hercules), which led to
his untimely and accidental death by one of the hero's poisoned
arrows. For his kindness, Zeus is said to have placed him in
                the sky as this constellation.
              In ancient Mesopotamia
this constellation was perceived as a bull. The Greek and Mesopotamian
                  interpretations of Centaurus
were sometimes merged as figure of the Minotaur, a hybrid of
man and bull. The Minotaur is hypothesized by some mythologists
to be a form of the Phoenician deity Moloch. Moloch, a Sun God
whose name means "King", was portrayed as a man with
                the head of a bull.
              Of the astrological
influence of Centaurus Robson states, "According
to Ptolemy the stars in the human part of the figure are of the
nature of Venus and Mercury, and the bright stars in the horse's
part of Venus and Jupiter. It is said to give hard-heartedness,
inclination to vengeance, love of arms, strong passions and an
                energetic nature.”

Intelligent, creative and passionate characteristics are denoted.
Strong emotions, instincts, urges and opinions are likely, as
is a questioning and contemplative mind. A protective or aggressive
attitude may manifest in response to adversity. Music, dance,
art and physical activity may become areas of interest. A desire
for personal achievement and influence is likely as well.
              Arrakis is Mu Draconis
in the constellation of Draco, the Dragon. The word Arrakis
is derived from the Arabic Ar-Raqis, meaning "the
Dancers". This star is the brightest among a group of stars
which was thought to represent the people who danced to the music
played by the neighboring star Alwaid (also known as Rastaban),
the Lute Player. These stars are positioned in the head of the
                Great Dragon.
              In Ancient Arabia,
the constellation Draco was interpreted as a group of Mother
Camels protecting a baby camel from hungry
hyenas. In other ancient civilizations, this constellation was
seen as a powerful and fearsome entity. The Egyptians associated
it with Tawaret, whose name means "Great One". This
hippopotamus-headed goddess, sometimes pictured with the back
of a crocodile and legs of a lioness, presided over pregnancy
and childbirth as well as all forms of protection. There is a
clear thematic correlation between Tawaret's ferocious motherly
instinct to protect and the story of the Mother Camels.
              In Babylon, Draco
was associated with Tiamat, the great serpent goddess of Primordial
Chaos, whose name may mean "Life Mother".
In early Hindu worship, the constellation was know as Shi-Shu-Mara,
or "the Alligator". In Persia it was Azdeha, "the
                Man-Eating Serpent".
In Classical times Draco was associated with many serpentine
monsters. Most commonly it corresponded to Ladon, the dragon
who guarded Hera's tree of Golden Apples in the Garden of the
Hesperides. Ladon was murdered by Heracles, who stole the Golden
Apples as the eleventh of his twelve Heroic Labors. The Classical
image of Ladon wrapped around the apple tree has been linked
to the Biblical Garden of Eden myth, in which the Serpent tempts
Eve with an apple from the Tree of Knowledge, leading to the
                Fall of Man.
              Regarding the astrological
significance of this constellation, Robson states, "According
to Ptolemy, the bright stars are like Saturn and Mars. Draco
gives an artistic and emotional yet
somber nature, a penetrating and analytical mind, much travel
and many friends. . .By the Kabalists it is associated with the
Hebrew letter Mem and the 13th Tarot Trump, Death.”

              Men is Alpha Lupi
in the constellation of Lupus, the Wolf. The name Men is Chinese,
and translates to "the South Gate".
The significance of this title is unclear.
              The constellation
of Lupus was identified in the ancient Mediterranean with a
wild beast slain by the neighboring constellation of Centaurus,
the Centaur. Hipparchus of Bithynia named it Therion, or "Beast",
around 200 BCE. Ptolemy later identified it specifically with
the Wolf, a beast sacred to Mars, the God of War.
Wolves are noted for their ferocity, as well as their fierce
familial loyalty. In Roman legend, Romulus, the founder of Rome,
and his brother Remus, were nursed and cared for in their infancy
by a mother wolf. For this reason, wolves were viewed as protective
ancestors in ancient Rome. To site one before a battle was a
sure sign of victory. The Ainu people of Japan, as well as the
Turkic and Mongolian tribes of Central Asia, also trace their
lineage back to wolves. Ghenghis Khan, like Romulus, claimed
this noble canine as his kin.
In the Americas, wolves were known as spiritual guides capable
of leading human souls through the spirit world after death.
In agricultural Japan, wolves were believed to provide protection
                against fire, disease and calamity.
Whether as a revered ancestor, a helpful companion, or a fierce
warrior, the wolf is almost universally portrayed as the epitome
                of protection, defense and fidelity.
              The Akkadians knew
Men as Urbat, which translates to either "the
Beast of Death" or "the Star of Dead Fathers".
The former translation seems to relate to both the wolf's ability
to kill and its comfort in the spirit world as evidenced by the
American legends. As for the latter translation, it correlates
to the connection of the wolf to concept of strength through
family bonds and reverence for ones predecessors.
              In ancient Babylon,
where the nearby constellation of Centaurus was perceived as
a celestial Bull, this star was known as Kakkab
Su-gab Gud-Elim, "the Star at the Left Hand of the Horned
Bull". It was also included in the Arabic asterism Al Fahd, "the
Leopard". Like the wolf, the leopard is a stealthy hunter
known for its fierce courage in conflict.
              Of the astrological
influence of Lupus Robson states, "According
to Ptolemy the bright stars are like Saturn and partly like Mars.
Lupus is said to give an acquisitive, grasping, aggressive, prudent
and treacherous nature, with a keen desire for knowledge, and
                strong ill-regulated passions.”

An expansive outlook is denoted, as is the ability to recognize
opportunity. The power to facilitate communication between individuals
and organizations may also be indicated. Travel, trade, diplomacy
and exploration may be important life themes. Social and economic
                ascendancy is possible.
Avior is Epsilion Carinae in the constellation of Carina, the
                Keel (of the Ship).
              This constellation
is one of the four which together comprised Argo Navis, the
Ship Argo. In 1752 an astronomer named Nicolas
Louis de Lacaille officially split Argo Navis into Vela ("the
Sail"), Carina ("The Keel"), Puppis ("the
                Deck") and Pyxis ("the Compass").
In Greek legend, the ship Argo was the seafaring vessel of the
hero Jason. The crew of this ship, the Argonauts, were fierce
warriors and heroes in their own right. Jason and the Argonauts
traveled to Colchis (modern day Georgia) in search of the Golden
Fleece, the magical hide of the winged ram Chrysomallos. Many
authors have attempted to decode the symbolic meaning of the
Golden Fleece. Robert Graves claimed that it was symbolic of
Zeus in his ram form, while Palaephatus thought it represented
an esoteric alchemical text. Marcus Porcius Cato and Marcus Terentius
Varro associated the Golden Fleece with royal power, which would
correspond to Grave's analysis, as Zeus is a deity embodying
                royal power.
              Zeus is synonymous
with Jupiter, and indeed Robson tells us that, "According to Ptolemy, the bright stars (in Argo Navis)
are like Saturn and Jupiter". Robson also claims that the
influence of this constellation, "is said to give prosperity
in trade and voyages, and strength of mind and spirit".
In the ancient Mediterranean trade by sea was vital to the economy,
so it is no surprise that sea voyages would be linked to the
concept of wealth and prosperity, another quality of Zeus/Jupiter.
Avior is only visible from the Southern Hemisphere and thus
bears no Classical name or mythological associations. The star
was named by Her Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office in the 1930's
in England during the creation of a navigational almanac for
use by the Royal Air Force. It is notable that the mythos of
both the greater constellation and this star in particular relate
to the concept of navigation and exploration, albeit in different
                contexts.
              The exact meaning
of the word Avior is unclear. It is most likely derived from
the Latin Avi, meaning "Bird", which is
the root of the English words aviary, avian and aviation (the
purpose of the Royal Air Force). Avi is also Sanskrit word meaning "Sun".
It is possible that the Latin and Sanskrit uses of this syllable
may be related, as the flight of birds allows them to move closer
to the Sun than earthbound creatures. Sensibly, birds are often
mythological associated with Solar deities or cast in the role
of the Sun's messenger. In Ukrainian myth, birds are portrayed
as divine messengers who carry the golden keys to the Universe,
a gift bestowed on them by the Sun God. In Ancient Egypt the
Sun/Sky god Horus is depicted with the head of a falcon. Avior
may be similar in influence to a combination of Jupiter, Mercury
                and the Sun.

breakthroughs are possible, especially those which aid humanity.
Active, courageous and confrontational qualities may also manifest.
Many drastic changes will be experienced in one's environment

              Denebola is Beta
Leonis in the constellation of Leo, the Lion. The name Denebola
is derived from the Arabic Al Dhanab al Asad,
or "the Tail of the Lion", referring to this star's
position in the constellation. Denebola was included in the ancient
Babylonian ecliptic asterism Zibbat A, which also means "the
                Tail of the Lion".
              Other Mesopotamian
titles ascribed to this star include Lamash, meaning "Colossus", and Sa, meaning "Blue" (the
color of Denebola). It was also known as Mikid-isati, or "Burning
of the Fire". Allen postulates that this moniker "may
refer to the hot season of the year when the sun is near (Denebola)".
Comparably, the Sogdians knew this star as Widhu, or "Burning
                One".
              Fire is a capricious
and volatile element, traits which are also ascribed to the
astrological influence of the planet Uranus.
According to Ebertin, Denebola "has a Uranus nature".
Ebertin elucidates that, "It is supposed that, in mundane
horoscopes, major catastrophes are triggered off by (Denebola)".
Ebertin also hypothesizes a connection between this star and "exciting
events", as well as "work connected with matters of
reform and progress". One example cited regarding the catastrophic
influence of Denebola is it's position conjunct the ascendant
at the launching of the Titanic.
              Robson compiles several
                  opinions regarding Denebola's nature: "According
to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Saturn and Venus; to Wilson
                and Pearce, of Saturn, Venus and Mercury; to Simmonite of Uranus;
and to Alvidas of Mercury, Uranus and Mars.” Robson associates
the qualities of swift judgment and daring with this star, attributes
which reflect the active essence of both fire and Uranus. Another
parallel to this theme of tempestuous transformation arises from
Denebola's association with the 10th manzil, or Arabic Lunar
Mansion, known as Al Sarfah, "the Changer".
              Robson also states
that Denebola makes it's natives "self-controlled,
generous, and busy with other people's affairs". This aspect
of Denebola's character may be investigated through it's inclusion
in the nakshatra, or Vedic Lunar Mansion, of Uttaraphalguni.
Uttaraphalguni means "the Latter Fig Tree". It's ruling
deity is Aryaman, the God of Patronage. This lunar asterism is
associated with philanthropy, generosity, kindness, alliances,
                marriage and mentorship.
              Denebola was also
included in the Chinese asterism Woo Ti Tso, or "Seat of the Five Emperors".
The constellation of Leo, which contains Denebola, is generally
thought to represent the Nemean Lion, the vicious child of Typhon
and Echidna, who was slain by Hercules.
Robson
also states that "By the Kabalists, Leo is associated with
the Hebrew letter Kaph and the 11th Tarot Trump, Strength".

be adopted. Scientific and exploratory pursuits are favored,
as are all activities requiring critical thinking and attention
                to detail.
Alsciaukat is 31 Lyncis in the constellation Lynx, a faint and
obscure constellation which lies between Ursa Major and Auriga.
              The constellation
Lynx was invented in 1690 by astronomer Johannes Hevelius,
who claimed that only the "lynx-eyed", or
those endowed with good vision, would be able to see it. The
term "lynx-eyed" stems from the Medieval association
of the Lynx with the ability to see without being seen as well
as the ability to divine the secret meanings of things. This
attribute of piercing insight prompted the Accademia dei Lincei,
or "Academy of the Lynxes", an Italian society which
contributed enormously to the scientific revolution, to so title
themselves. This name was specifically culled by the society's
founders from Giambattista della Porta's work Magia Naturalis,
or "Natural Magic", which states, "with lynx like
eyes, examining those things which manifest themselves, so that
having observed them, he may zealously use them.” This
passage has obvious links to the scientific method, which is
based upon the observation of the natural world.
              Of the nature of
                  this constellation Robson states, "It
is said to give stealthiness and cunning, many changes in life,
                and an adventurous career.”
              As for Alsciaukat
specifically, its name is derived from the Arabic Al Shaukah,
                  meaning "Thorn". Thorns are spikes
which serve to protect plants from harm. They universally symbolize
protection. It may be of note that Federico Cesi, the founder
of the Academy of Lynxes, was preoccupied mainly with botany,
                the study of plants.

              Caph is Beta Cassiopeiae
in the constellation of Cassiopeia, the Queen. The name Caph
is derived from the Arabic Al-Kaff,
meaning "the Palm of the Hand". This title arises from
the ancient Arabic perception of the constellation of Cassiopeia
as an outstretched human hand. Our hands are the primary instruments
through which we interact with our environment and manifest our
will. An active, involved and creative influence may therefore
be ascribed to the influence of Caph. The palm of the hand is
also linked to concepts of fate and destiny, themes which may
                likewise apply.
              The Persians thought
of Cassiopeia as a camel, thus referring to Caph as Al Saham
al Nakah, or "the Camel's Hump".
This title alludes to the accumulation of resources.
This star, along with Alpha Andromeda (Alpheratz) and Gamma
Pegasi (Algenib), was one of the Three Guides, a group of stellar
navigational guideposts. According to Allen, this location in
the sky is useful for marking sidereal time, due to it's proximity
to both the North Pole and the Prime Meridian.
              In Greek mythology,
Cassiopeia (whose name means "She Whose
Words Excel"), was the Queen of Ethiopia. She was the wife
of King Cepheus and the mother of the beautiful princess Andromeda.
Cassiopeia was known for her pride and vanity. She arrogantly
boasted that her daughter was even more beautiful than the ocean
dwelling nymphs known as the Nereids. This angered the ocean
god Poseidon, who sent a powerful sea monster to wreck havoc
on the land. The King and Queen were at a loss as to how to appease
this destructive spirit. They consulted an oracle who told them
that the lovely Andromeda must be sacrificed to the monster.
Andromeda was chained to a rocky cliff to await her demise, until
the hero Perseus descended upon the monster wielding the head
of Medusa. The sight of this hideous talisman turned the beast
to stone, and thus Andromeda's life was spared.
              Of the influence
of this constellation Robson states; "According
to Ptolemy this constellation is of the nature of Saturn and

abilities may develop. There may also be a true love of producing
quality work. Ingenious and original thought is possible. Many
changes may occur throughout life, and undesirable circumstances
may be transformed into fortuitous ones.
              Fornacis is Alpha
Fornacis in the constellation of Fornax, the Furnace. Originally
called Fornax Chemica, or "the Chemical
Furnace", this constellation was invented by French astronomer
Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1752. The "chemical furnace" referred
to was a type of solid fuel furnace employed by chemists at that
time for using heat in their experiments. The choice of this
name reflects the age in which Lacaille lived, a period marked
by burgeoning interest in exploring and understanding the material
                world through scientific experimentation.
              Of the influence
of this constellation Robson states, "Fornax
is said to give an ardent, enthusiastic, persuasive, practical
and pioneering nature with a fondness for engineering, chemical
                or metal work.”
Fornax was originally the name of the Roman goddess of bread
baking. This deity may embody the practical and materially-oriented
nature of this constellation alluded to be Robson. Craftsmanship,
manual dexterity and creativity may be implicated. The chemistry
of Lacaille's time was an extension of Medieval alchemy, a pursuit
which aimed to transform raw and mundane materials into sublime
and precious ones. This process is analogous to that of baking
bread, in which raw materials are transformed into an edible
product. Any pursuit or process which follows this model may
                be exalted by Fornax.
Before Lacaille's invention of Fornax, Fornacis was included
in the constellation of Eridanus, the River. This older constellation
may also contribute to understanding the nature and functioning
                of this star.
The constellation of Eridanus is most commonly associated with
the Greek tale of Phaeton, the son of a mortal woman and the
Sun god Helios. Helios had sworn to grant his son one wish. Phaeton
foolishly asked to drive Helios' Solar Chariot across the sky
for one day. The god knew this was a bad idea, but he was bound
by his promise, so he begrudgingly let Phaeton take the reins.
Phaeton soon realized he could not control the celestial horses
that drew the Chariot of the Sun. They ran wild, first galloping
too close to the Earth and causing it to burn, then veering too
far away, causing it to freeze. Phaeton's wild ride was finally
ceased when Zeus shot him down with a thunderbolt and restored
Helios to his proper place at the reins of the Chariot. The constellation
of Eridanus is a long zig-zagging line of stars, and it is said
to represent the haphazard path along which Phaeton careened
                in the Solar Chariot.
In a slightly different interpretation of the tale, Eridanus
represents the river in the Underworld into which Phaeton fell
after being struck down by Zeus. Classical Greek writings suggest
that this mythological river of the Underworld was also a real
river on Earth. Writers like Hesiod and Herdotus asserted that
Eridanos was a river in Northern Europe rich in amber. Scholars
have since speculated about which river these writers were actually
referring to, but no conclusions have been reached. The name
Eridanos has also recently been adopted by geologists to describe
a river that flowed from Lapland to the North Sea between 40
million and 700 thousand years ago.
Another mythical figure associated with this constellation is
Aquarius, the Water Bearer. The river Eridanus is sometimes identified
as the water which flows from the Water Bearer's vessel. In Aquarius'
role as catalyst of the Great Flood which drowned the Earth according
to Ancient Near Eastern legend, Eridanus would in fact be the
Great Flood itself. This event is an elemental cataclysm not
unlike Phaeton's disastrous ride through the heavens.
              Of the nature of
                  this constellation, Robson writes "According
to Ptolemy, all the stars with the exception of Achernar are
like Saturn. Eridanus gives a love of knowledge and science,
much travel and many changes, a position of authority, but danger
                of accidents".
It is of note that science is a common theme to both Fornax
and Eridanus, and thus certainly to Fornacis.

A confident, enthusiastic, adventurous, active and energetic
character is indicated. There may be a desire to help or protect
others. An inclination towards initiating change and pioneering
new technologies or ideologies is denoted. Combat, challenge
and confrontation may appeal to the individual, and the tendency
to seek risk and excitement is likely. Medical, therapeutic,
inspirational, exploratory, athletic, revolutionary and expressive
                pursuits are favored.
              Sharatan (or Sheratan)
is Beta Arietes in the constellation of Aries, the Ram. The
name Sharatan is derived from the Arabic
Al Sharat, meaning "the Sign". As Allen notes, the
rising of this star was a sign for the beginning of the year,
as it "marked the vernal equinox in the days of Hipparchos,
about the time when these stars were being named".
              Sharatan and Mesarthim
(Gamma Arietes) comprise the manzil, or Arabic Lunar Mansion,
of Al Sharatain, meaning "the Signs".
This title is the plural form of Al Sharat. According to Robson,
this manzil "causes discord and journeys".
              Travel is also a
theme associated with Ashvini, the nakshatra, or Vedic Lunar
Mansion, which includes this star. Ashvini means "Celestial
Horse Woman", and is symbolically represented by a horse's
head. The two stars which compose Ashvini (Alpha and Beta Arietes)
represent the Ashvini Kumaras, magical twin horsemen adept at
healing the sick. The benevolent Kumara brothers are also invoked
to aid in childbirth. Ashvini is associated with all beginnings
and initiations as well as healing, journeys, courage, protection
and action. Similarly, Sheratan was a part of the ancient Persian
asterism Padevar, meaning "Protecting Pair", as well
as the Sogdian Bashish, "the Protector".
              In ancient Babylon
this star was known as Mahru-sha-rishu-ku, or "the Front of the Head of Ku", the significance
of which is obscure. It is of note that this star was associated
with "the front of the head" by the Babylonians as
it was associated with a horse's head in India and a ram's head
                in Greece.
              Robson states that
this star is "Of the nature of Mars
and Saturn". Ebertin, who refers to this star as "El-Scheratain",
also notes its "Martian and Saturnian powers". Both
authors link the influence of this star to danger and impulsive
                action.
              The constellation
of Aries represents Chrysomallos, a Golden Winged Ram. According
to Greek myth, this creature was sent by
Nephele (whose name means "Cloudy") to rescue her children
Phrixus (whose name means "a Ripple of Wind on Water")
and Helle from being murdered by their jealous stepmother Ino
(aunt of the god Dionysus). In some versions of this story, it
is the god Hermes rather than Nephele who is credited with the
                gift of the golden ram.
              On their journey,
Helle fell off the ram and drowned in the Dardanelles (a narrow
strait which connects the Aegean Sea and
the Sea of Marmara), after which it was named Hellespont, or "Helle's
Sea". Her brother Phrixus survived the journey and arrived
in Colchis (now known as Georgia) where he sacrificed Chrysomallos
                to the god Ares (Mars).
The magical hide of the Chrysomallos was the Golden Fleece sought
by Jason and the Argonauts. Many authors have attempted to decode
the symbolic meaning of the Golden Fleece. Robert Graves claimed
that it was symbolic of Zeus in his ram form, while Palaephatus
thought it represented an esoteric alchemical text. Marcus Porcius
Cato and Marcus Terentius Varro associated the Golden Fleece
with royal power, which would correspond to Grave's analysis,
as Zeus is a deity embodying royal power. Such power was certainly
accorded to Phrixus. After his sacrifice of Chrysomallos to Ares,
he was offered marriage to Chalciope, the princess of Colchis.
Many ancient legends point to the symbolic significance of rams.
In Egypt, the god Khnum, who was seen as responsible for the
creation of human bodies as well as source of the Nile River,
bore the head of a ram. Some of the most important figures in
the Old Testament of the Bible including Abraham, Isaac and Moses
were shepherds. These patriarchs concerned themselves with the
governance of the spiritual lives of people as well as the physical
lives of sheep. Sheep were sacrificed to God in Judaic and Islamic
traditions as well as in ancient Greece and Rome.
              Of the nature of
this constellation Robson quotes Ptolemy, "The
stars in the head of Aries possess an influence similar in it's
effects to that of Mars and Saturn; those in the mouth act similarly
to Mercury, and in some degree to Saturn; those in the hinder
foot to Mars; those in the tail to Venus". Sharatan is located
in the head of Aries, so according to Ptolemy it functions like
                Mars and Saturn.
              Robson also relates
that Aries is associated by the Kabalists with the Hebrew letter
He and the 5th Tarot Trump, "the
Pope" (also known as "the Hierophant").

literary, artistic, musical, psychological, philosophical or
                mystical inclinations are likely.
              Altarf is Beta Cancri
in the constellation of Cancer, the Crab. The name Altarf is
derived from the Arabic Al Tarf, meaning "the
End" or "the Tip". This title refers to the star's
position on the lower extremity of the constellation.
The constellation of Cancer is thought to represent the crab
that bit the heel of Heracles during his battle with Hydra (thus
the proximity of the constellations Cancer and Hydra). This mythical
crab was an emissary of the goddess Hera (or the Roman Juno),
                who disliked Heracles.
              Hera is the Supreme
Goddess; the Queen of the Gods. She is often associated with
feminine power, emotions, intuition and motherhood.
Fittingly, these are also themes associated with the astrological
sign which corresponds to this constellation. Cancer is known
as "the House of the Moon" and has been perceived as
a sanctuary of Lunar power. It is the darkest and most inconspicuous
of all the constellations of the zodiac, relating to the Lunar
qualities of receptivity, coldness, mystery and introspection.
              Of the constellation
of the Crab Robson quotes Ptolemy; "The
two stars in the eyes of Cancer are of the same influence as
Mercury, and are also moderately like Mars. Those in the claws
are like Saturn and Mercury". Ptolemy makes no mention of
the lower legs of the Crab, which include Altarf.
              Robson also tells
us that "By the Kabalists Cancer is associated
with the Hebrew letter Tzaddi and the 18th Tarot Trump, The Moon.”

Literary pursuits, journalism, comedy, sports, dance and theatre
                are favored.
              Talitha Australis
is Kappa Ursae Majoris in the constellation of Ursa Major,
the Great Bear. The name Talitha is derived from
the Arabic Al Kafzah al Thalithah, meaning "the Third Spring
of the Gazelle". Australis is Latin for "Southern".
This star shares its name with its close neighbor Talitha Borealis
(Iota Ursae Majoris). These two stars were known in China as
Shang Tae, or "High Dignitary", a title conferring
                eminence.
              Gazelles are a type
of antelope known for their gentleness, beauty, grace, speed
and agility. The origin of this star's name
alludes to one of the gazelle's most unique gifts, its ability
to jump (or "spring") high into the air. This activity
is not only used to increase speed but also to display strength
and frighten predators, proving that although dainty the gazelle
is not so easily intimidated. In India, gazelles are identified
with Vayu, the God of Wind. Vayu relates to breath as well as
prana, the animating force which characterizes living beings.
The movement and flow of breath and vital energy, along with
the bold and mercurial qualities of the majestic gazelle may
describe the influence of the Talitha duo.
              Talitha is also an
                  Aramaic word meaning "Young Woman".
In the Gospel of Mark Jesus says "Talitha kum", meaning "Young
woman arise", when bringing a dead girl back to life. This
story deals with power over the animating life force associated
with gazelles through the god Vayu in Hindu tradition.
              Ursa Major, also
known today as The Big Dipper, is one of the brightest and
most recognizable constellations in the night sky
and has historically fascinated humanity. In England it is seen
as a plough, and in Burma as a lobster. In Arabia this constellation
is seen as a funeral procession, with the three stars forming
a line (the "tail" of the bear) being mourners following
                a coffin.
              In Greek myth the
Great Bear was Callisto, whose name means "Most
Beautiful". Callisto was a nymph who was transformed into
a bear by the goddess Artemis when she discovered that Callisto
had been impregnated by Zeus. The child Callisto gave birth to
was Arcas, who was known to be a great hunter.
Iroquois legend also refers to Ursa Major as a bear, with the
four stars which form a rectangular pattern being the bear itself
and the three which form a line being hunters in pursuit

Strong mental and organizational abilities are indicated, as
are the qualities of determination and perseverance. There may
be a desire to sacrifice something of one's self for the purpose
of gaining knowledge, liberation or power.
              Alshat is Nu Capricorni
in the constellation of Capricorn, the Sea Goat. The name Alshat
is derived from the Arabic Al Shat,
meaning "the Sheep". This star is often identified
with its brighter neighbor Dabih (Beta Capricorni), whose title
is derived from the Arabic Sa'd ad-dhabih, or "the Lucky
Star of the Slaughterer". Together Alshat and Dabih are
                sacrificial beast and slaughtering priest.
              The constellation
of Capricorn represents the "Sea Goat",
or goat with the tail of a fish, into which the Greek god Pan
transformed when he jumped into the Nile River to escape the
wrath of the monster Typhon. Pan is the god of woodlands and
of wild animals as well as animal instincts. His name literally
                translates to "All".
              In another Classical
interpretation of this constellation, the goat pictured is
Amalthea, the Goat Goddess who cared for the
infant Zeus in a remote cave while the young god was being hidden
from his father Cronos, who sought to destroy him. Amalthea means "Tender

under the sign of the Goat much as Zeus grew under the care of
                Amalthea.
              On the nature of
the stars of Capricorn, Robson quotes Ptolemy: "The
stars in the horns of Capricorn have efficacy similar to that
of Venus, and partly to that of Mars. The stars in the mouth
are like Saturn, and partly like Venus; those in the feet and
in the belly act in the same manner as Mars and Mercury: those
in the tail are like Saturn and Jupiter.” Alshat is located
in the mouth of the Goat, so according to Ptolemy it's essence
would be similar to that of Saturn and Venus.
Robson adds that Capricorn is associated with the Hebrew letter
Yod and the 10th Tarot Trump, the Wheel of Fortune.

A degree of pragmatism, patience, gentleness and dedication
is denoted, as is the tendency to delight in the pleasures of
the material world. There may also be a great desire for mental
stimulation and an aptitude for hard work. Artistic, dramatic,
literary, musical, intellectual, commercial, agricultural, culinary
and romantic pursuits are favored. Great popularity may be gained.
              Bos is Rho Capricorni
in the constellation of Capricorn, the Sea Goat. The name Bos
is Latin for "Ox", "Bull" or "Cow".
It is comparable to the Latin root bov, from which we derive
the English word "bovine". Cows are traditionally associated
with the qualities of stability, patience, strength, dependability
and stubbornness. They have been revered for the life-sustaining
properties of their meat, milk and hides. The Egyptian goddess
Hathor, who is traditionally depicted in the form of a cow or
as a woman with bull horns atop her head, is the patroness of
fertility, motherhood, earthly abundance, joy and celebration.
Similarly, the Olympian goddess Hera, consort of Zeus (Jupiter)
and Queen of the Gods, bore the epithet Bo-opis, or "Ox
                Eyed".
Another bovine divinity acknowledged in ancient Egypt is Apis,
a solar bull god associated with agriculture and nourishment.
Apis was said to be the soul (ka) of the god Osiris.
These mythological interpretations of the creature for whom
Bos was named reveal the possibility that some influence similar
to that of Venus, Jupiter and the Sun may emanate from this star.
              According to Robson,
Bos is "of the nature of Saturn and
Venus". Robson goes on to state that Bos in conjunction
with Mercury "gives a clever and piercing intellect".
In other words, Bos may enhance and accentuate Mercurial attributes.
              As for the constellation
of Capricorn, is said to represent the "Sea Goat", or goat with the tail of a fish, into
which the Greek god Pan transformed when he jumped into the Nile
River to escape the wrath of the monster Typhon. Pan is the god
of woodlands and of wild animals as well as animal instincts.
His name literally translates to "All". In another
Classical interpretation of this constellation, the goat pictured
is Amalthea, the Goat Goddess that cared for the infant Zeus
in a remote cave while the young god was being hidden from his
father Cronos, who sought to destroy him. Amalthea means "Tender
Goddess", and symbolizes caring, nourishment, and protection
from harm. At the Winter Solstice, when the Sun enters Capricorn,
the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter. Thus the

are indicated. There may be a desire to communicate with others
and participate in worldly affairs. A triumphant and victorious
attitude in adverse circumstances is possible, as is the ability
to reinvent oneself. An interest in exploration and innovation
                may develop.
              Dabih is Beta Capricorni
in the constellation of Capricorn, the Sea Goat. The name Dabih
is derived from the Arabic Al Sa'd
al Dhabih, meaning "the Lucky Star of the Slaughterer".
This is also the name of the 20th manzil, or Arabic lunar mansion,
with which this star is associated. Al Sa'd al Dhabih refers
to the ancient Arabic ceremonial sacrifices which were performed
at the helical rising of Capricorn. The rising of this star in
particular signaled the beginning of a winter solstice ritual
equivalent to the ancient Greek Chronia, the Roman Saturnalia
or Sol Invictus Celebration, the Japanese Amaterasu Celebration,
the Nordic Midvinterblot, the Jewish Tekufat Tebet/Hanukkah,
the Northern European Yule or the Christian Christmas. The desire
to celebrate the return of longer and warmer days after the darkest
night of the year, often allegorized as the rebirth of a deity
equated with the Sun, seems to be a universal human urge. Thus
Dabih is associated with the themes inherent to these winter
solstice festivals; the victory of light over darkness and the
                celebration of continued survival.
              Dabih is paired with
                  its neighbor Alshat, meaning "the
Sheep". Dabih is typically perceived as the slaughtering
priest, and Alshat as the sacrificial animal.
              In China Dabih was
associated with the lunar mansion Keen Nieu, the Ox. Allen
asserts that this asterism was "intimately
connected in religious worship with the rearing of the silkworm".
Silk production in China dates back to the 27th Century BCE and
was for many centuries an essential export and a staple of the
economy. The trade of this material connected China to the rest
of the world. Chinese silk has been found in the wrappings of
Egyptian mummies dating back to at least the year 1070 BCE. Due
to the affiliation of Dabih with the phenomenon of silk, an emphasis
on ingenuity, craftsmanship, trade of goods and ideas, and subsequent
success may be implied. This unique process of producing fine
fabric from the excretions of worms is not unlike the metaphor
of the lotus flower ascending from the murky pond. A transformation
of substance from the coarse and mundane to the sublime is visible
in these operations. The change from worm to silk and mud to
lotus reflects the triumphant quality of the resurrection of
the Sun God at the winter solstice.
              The constellation
of Capricorn, which includes Dabih, is said to represent the "Sea Goat", or goat with the tail
of a fish, into which the Greek god Pan transformed when he jumped
into the Nile River to escape the wrath of the monster Typhon.
Pan is the god of woodlands and of wild animals as well as animal
instincts. His name literally translates to "All".
              In another Classical
interpretation of this constellation, the goat pictured is
Amalthea, the Goat Goddess that cared for the
infant Zeus in a remote cave while the young god was being hidden
from his father Cronos, who sought to destroy him. Amalthea means "Tender
Goddess", and symbolizes caring, nourishment, and protection
from harm. Zeus, the King of the Gods, began his life in the
care of a goat, just as the earth begins it's yearly cycle around
the sun at the advent of the sign of Capricorn.
              On the nature of
the stars of Capricorn, Robson quotes Ptolemy: "The

              On the nature of

personal sacrifices may be made throughout life for the greater
good. There may also be a strong inclination to contribute something
lasting and monumental to the world.
              Prima Giedi (also
known as Giedi Prima or simply Giedi) is Alpha 1 Capricorni
in the constellation of Capricorn, the Sea Goat.
Along with its close neighbor Giedi Secunda (Alpha 2 Capricorni),
this star was known as Algedi, a word derived from the Arabic
                Al Jady, or "the Goat".
              Prima Giedi has also
been called Dabih, although this title typically designates
Beta Capricorni. Alpha and Beta Capricorni
comprise the manzil, or Arabic lunar asterism, Al Sa'd al Dhabih,
meaning "the Lucky Star of the Slaughterer". Al Sa'd

              This star was also
included in the Akkadian asterism Uz, "the
Goat", and the Babylonian asterism Qarnu Shahu, or "the
Horn of the Goat". Goats are generally known to for their
curious, intelligent, brave, adventurous, enduring, tenacious
and playful natures. These characteristics may relate to the
influence of Prima Giedi as well.
Allen notes that this star was associated in ancient Sumer with
a ruler named Amar-Sin. This king was noted in his time for many
ambitious architectural projects, including work on the ziggarut
at Eridu, a building some scholars have linked to the legendary
                Tower of Babel.
              Robson states of
Prima Giedi, "According to Ptolemy it
is of the nature of Venus and Mars; to Simmonite, of Venus and

Intelligence, creativity, enthusiasm, a productive nature, a
triumphant and victorious attitude in adverse circumstances,
the ability to reinvent oneself, and an interest in exploration
and innovation are predominant characteristics. A wildly imaginative
and instinctual nature tempered by pragmatism is possible.
              Secunda Giedi (also
known as Giedi Secunda) is Alpha 2 Capricorni in the constellation
of Capricorn, the Sea Goat. Along with its
close neighbor Prima Giedi (Alpha 1 Capricorni), this star was
known as Algedi, a word derived from the Arabic Al Jady, or "the
                Goat".
              Alpha and Beta Capricorni
comprise the manzil, or Arabic lunar asterism, Al Sa'd al Dhabih,
                  meaning "the Lucky Star of
the Slaughterer". Al Sa'd al Dhabih refers to the ancient
Arabic ceremonial sacrifices which were performed at the helical
rising of Capricorn. The rising of the stars in the head of the
celestial Goat signaled the beginning of a winter solstice ritual
equivalent to the ancient Greek Chronia, the Roman Saturnalia
or Sol Invictus Celebration, the Japanese Amaterasu Celebration,
the Nordic Midvinterblot, the Jewish Tekufat Tebet/Hanukkah,
the Northern European Yule or the Christian Christmas. The desire
to celebrate the return of longer and warmer days after the darkest
night of the year, often allegorized as the rebirth of a deity
equated with the Sun, seems to be a universal human urge. Thus
Prima Giedi is associated with the themes inherent to these winter
solstice festivals; the victory of light over darkness and the
                celebration of continued survival.
              This star was also
included in the Akkadian asterism Uz, "the
Goat", and the Babylonian asterism Qarnu Shahu, or "the
Horn of the Goat". Goats are generally known to for their
curious, intelligent, brave, adventurous, enduring, tenacious
and playful natures. These characteristics may relate to the
influence of Secunda Giedi as well.
              The greater constellation
of Capricorn is said to represent the "Sea Goat", or goat with the tail of a fish, into
which the Greek god Pan transformed when he jumped into the Nile
River to escape the wrath of the monster Typhon. Pan is the god
of woodlands and of wild animals as well as animal instincts.
His name literally translates to "All".
              On the nature of
the stars of Capricorn, Robson quotes Ptolemy: "The
stars in the horns of Capricorn have efficacy similar to that
of Venus, and partly to that of Mars. The stars in the mouth
are like Saturn, and partly like Venus; those in the feet and
in the belly act in the same manner as Mars and Mercury: those
in the tail are like Saturn and Jupiter.” This star resides
in the horns of the sea goat, so according to Ptolemy it is similar
to Venus and Mars in its influence.
